54/100 Video - "Papercut"- Linkin Park (2000)

The rap rock song "Papercut" by Linkin Park starts off innocently enough. The boys from Linkin Park enter a lobby before starting to play their instruments.

However...soon after the music begins and the two vocalists start dancing, the mood changes to ominous.

An adjacent room shows dark imagery; a metaphor for the lyrics about paranoia.

As the video progresses, the sinister room reveals a sack crawling with ants. Moments later, a chrysalis generates hundreds of dragonflies.

Then evil faces start coming through the lobby walls and the room starts shape-shifting around the band.

In the latter half of the clip, the lights dim down while dozens of dragonflies enter the lobby and menacingly hover around the band members.

Some may not enjoy this sort of video but I adore it for its unique brand of creepy cool.

75/100 Video - "Sandstorm" - Darude (2000)

The video starts off harmlessly enough.

During the brief intro, DJ Darude is peacefully enjoying a sunny day on the steps of an historic building in Helsinki, chillin' with headphones.

Then as the techno kicks in, a woman carrying a briefcase blows by the DJ down the steps, followed closely by two security guards, a man and a woman.

The rest of the video is dedicated to one helluva epic chase!

There is a plot twist at the end, but I won't spoil it for you.

94/100 Video - "Yellow" – Coldplay (2000)

The original concept for the video "Yellow" by Coldplay was a party involving the entire band, however
the funeral of the drummer's mother was held on the day of the video shoot. So, instead of all four members appearing, just singer Chris Martin went to the shoot.

There were apparently a ton of extras kicking around, but Chris grabbed the cameraman and said "let’s just walk down the beach".

The video was shot on a windy, drizzly day on an empty beach in Dorset, England, and shows Chris walking along the shoreline singing to the camera. The clip was taken in one continuous shot, and in slow motion.

The final clip ended up becoming a poignant alternative, and somehow even works better than the original plan.

2000 - "Everything In Its Right Place" - Radiohead

Radiohead trades in the guitars for synths to kick start the new millennium. Mesmerized by those opening melodic synth chords in the opening scene in the underrated "Vanilla Sky" film, this hypnotic track is still a trip worth taking.

"Everything In Its Right Place" also opened Radiohead's "Kid A" album, signaling their foray into electronica.

This is a headphones kind of tune. A strong, hypnotic melody mixes with a paranoid vocal samples and electric piano; it's the collision of warm and cold.

Everything about this track is amazing. Everything in its right place, indeed!

Other favourites from 2000:

"In A Beautiful Place Out in the Country" – Boards of Canada

"One More Time" – Daft Punk

"Sour Girl" – Stone Temple Pilots

"Beautiful Day" – U2

"Porcelain" - Moby
