#83. " (1982)

Two words: jangling guitars!

"Back on the Chain Gang" by The Pretenders is like good home-cooking.

The tune will always take me back to road trips with my parents in the family station wagon where I sat in the back seat behind Dad, enjoying tunes like this while counting license plates en route to PEI.

Chrissie Hynde's smooth and soulful vocals perfectly complement those magical guitars.

How good is this song? Well, some chap named Morrissey has covered it:

Bubbling under: "Don't Get Me Wrong" - The Pretenders (1986)

"Don't Get Me Wrong" is just a perfect pop song; an infectious groove with some of the best lyrics capturing the moment you fancy someone for the first time. Let's not forget that iconic singer/songwriter/guitarist Chrissie Hynde has influenced a legion of female artists over the years including someone that goes by the name of Madonna.

"Don't Get Me Wrong" is a sort of subtle 'sister' to the more in-your-face "Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina & the Waves, an anthem celebrating rainbows, unicorns and general merriment.

The Pretenders had a number of notable 80s tunes including the fine "Brass In Pocket" and  "Back on the Chain Gang" with its unforgettable jangle guitar.
